Content Area: Earth and Space Science Australian Curriculum: Year 5 The Earth is part of a system of planets orbiting around a star (the sun).. Identify the planets of the solar system and compare how long they take to orbit the sun. Model the relative size of and distance between Earth, other planets in the solar system & sun. (ACARA, 2012) This content is built on as students progress through the older year levels for example the year 7 content looks into predictable phenomena on Earth, including seasons and eclipses, are caused by the relative position of the sun, Earth and the moon. This demonstrates that students need to understand the solar system before understanding these more advanced concepts.
Learning about our universe is essential for students so that they understand how our world is made up and how it works daily. This weebly will focus on understanding the solar system including the 8 planets, their characteristics, comparing different objects in space i.e. stars, planet and asteroids and finally creating a new planet to sustain life on.
